Congress is trying to sneak one in on us!  We deplore this type of policy making and hope you do too!

Tell Your Senators to OPPOSE the FTC amendment to S. 3217, the Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010

Congressman Waxman wants to slip an obscure anti-supplement measure into the Wall St. “Reform Bill”, already passed by the House.  This “sneak” legislative provision, going far beyond finance, provides a back door way to bypass the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the legislation that governs dietary supplement regulation by the FDA.

Pregnant women could - and probably should - consume 10 times more vitamin D than experts currently recommend, according to a new study.

Current guidelines for daily vitamin D intake during pregnancy range from 200 international units (IU) per day to 400 IU, the amount found in most prenatal vitamins. For decades, doctors have worried that too much vitamin D during pregnancy could cause birth defects, and under current guidelines anything over 2,000 IU per day is still considered potentially unsafe for anyone, not just pregnant women.

That much vitamin D is not only safe during pregnancy, the researchers say, but doubling it may actually reduce the risk of complications.

Pregnant women should not change their vitamin D intake without consulting their physicians, however. The study looked only at women in their second trimester and beyond, and it's not yet clear whether high doses of vitamin D are safe earlier in pregnancy, when organs are formed and the fetus is especially vulnerable to birth defects.

In the study, 500 women who were at least 12 weeks pregnant took either 400, 2,000, or 4,000 IU of vitamin D per day. The women who took 4,000 IU were least likely to go into labor early, give birth prematurely, or develop infections.  Read full article here.

There are "black and white savings that simple dietary therapies could represent for the nation in healthcare expenditures."

According to Judy Blatman, senior vice president of communications with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN, Washington, DC), studies have shown that consumers who live overall healthy lifestyles - which include eating a healthy diet, taking dietary supplements and exercising regularly - tend to have lower rates of chronic diseases, as well as other illnesses. “We’ve seen some studies from The Lewin Group that provide estimates on specific cost savings from certain supplements. In addition to societal benefits, it’s safe to say that practicing an overall healthy lifestyle can not only save the government money, but can also help you increase your quality of life, which is priceless.”

The study Blatman is referring to was conducted back in 2004, and actually put in black and white the savings that simple dietary therapies could represent for the nation in healthcare expenditures. An updated study released in 2007 offered numbers as staggering as the first.

The 2004 study, conducted by The Lewin Group for the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance (DSEA), which is now part of the Natural Products Foundation (NPF), discovered the daily use of calcium by people over the age of 65 would save $13.9 billion over five years (by reducing hip fractures) and daily use of folic acid among women would save $1.3 billion over five years from prevented birth defects. Omega- 3 fatty acids, glucosamine and saw palmetto supplements, which at the time were less researched, also showed substantial promise improving health and quality of life and potentially reducing healthcare costs.

The updated 2007 study, again commissioned by DSEA and carried out by The Lewin Group, outlined how strategic use of certain dietary supplements could improve the health of Americans and save over $24 billion in health care over five years.

The report highlighted the use of the supplement combinations calcium and vitamin D, lutein with zeaxanthin, and the individual supplementation of folic acid as well as omega-3.

According to the research:

  • A combined use of calcium and vitamin D could avert an estimated 776,000 hospitalizations for hip fractures over a five-year period, saving $16.1 billion.
  • Appropriate use of folic acid would save health care $1.4 billion and prevent neural tube defects in 600 infants.
  • By isolating the health care savings of omega-3 supplementation surrounding heart disease in senior citizens, the estimated price of such hospitalizations and the accompanying medical fees could offer $3.2 billion in savings.
  • Finally, the $3.6 billion savings projected if widespread lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation took place was attributed to maintaining independence for 190,927 people with age-related macular degeneration.
